Does anyone know how Foster Brooks first started doing the drunk man character?

Was there a period where he did standup but was not the drunk man?

Maybe he played a drunk character in a TV show and then he did the same guy in his standup act?

Here's a great example of his routine:

Wait, I found a Carson interview and he said it was a character he did on the Arthur Godfrey show and somebody asked him if he could do it for 15 minutes. It was also like his father.

When I was little, the first times I saw him I thought he was a real drunk guy. Other people thought that also.

I just noticed, he rarely smiles or laughs during his act.

I remember him! :-)

I wonder if his humor would still carry over today?

My favorite was when a guy was talking to him in a bar and FG (sloppy drunk of course) kept saying he had to catch a plane.
That goes on for a while and finally the guys asked him what was so important about the flight and FB said "well, I'm the only pilot."

He played a drunk on Dragnet before he was famous.

Frank Fontaine was another famous "drunk" as Crazy Guggenheim.

FYI: Dean Martin wasn't a drinker

"When he started to redo his nightclub act, he started at the Sands Hotel and had some writers helping him," she said. "It was like Jack Benny who had the violin thing and made fun about being cheap. Dad was so handsome, so debonair. They just thought, 'We'll put a drink in his hand and a cigarette.' Every man wanted to be him, and every woman wanted to be with him."

The truth of the matter, she said, was her father was swigging apple juice and not liquor when he performed. "He would be home for dinner every night," Martin said. "He would come home, and he and mom would have their one cocktail at the bar. He was kind. He was so different from what everybody thought he was. There was no one who could do Dean Martin better than Dean Martin."
