I'll be moving to Oregon, probably Eugene, where I have family, in a year or two. I'll be coming from the mojave desert, where mosquitos are rare. After a recent visit, and previous visits, to the Redwoods where the mosquitos bite my face off, I wonder what Oregon mosquitos are like. I'd like to avoid DEET if I can. It can't be as bad as the forest, can it? I didn't notice the mosquitos during previous summers when visiting Eugene. How thick are the skeeters in the Eugene area?

The only time we have experiences bad mosquito's are during the summer's up in the mountains around lakes... like Waldo. Ouch!

We are in Eugene, the Willamette Valley, and we see a few when we're near water but otherwise we don't see or notice them.

I'm from Texas and I'm used to horrible mosquito's biting at you all summer long regardless of where you are. So, to me, Eugene seems practically mosquito-free!

Moved here from midwest. Used to live in Wisconsin and Illinois. Back there the mosquito is the state bird! Here is it wonderful. Can probably count on one hand the number we have seen.

VERY few mosquitoes here which amazed me since there's so much water around.

Default Mosquitos

We have them here, but unless you're up in the mountains or near lakes, they aren't a problem. Mosquitos LOVE me. So I understand you! :-) I discovered a great thing two summers ago for camping in the mountains... Thermacells. You can buy them in the sports department at Walmart. They are pricey but worth every penny!!! People think I'm nuts but I'm telling ya, they work!! No sprays needed on your body!

Thank you for that advice! I'm going to try some of the handmade "natural" repellants or skin-so-soft, but if those don't help.. . It's always good to have options.
Now that it's winter, I'm noticing that-- with the temp in Eugene not changing much from day to night (as it does in the desert!)...it just STAYS cold but once you gt acclimated...
But I digress.
Now that it is winter, I'm wondering if the SUN ever comes out in Eugene lately.
I'll start a new threaad.

I hadn't sen a BAT in years before my last visit to Eugene but my friends had a cute little one hiding inside a patio umbrella. They surely keep the mosquitos population down.

I agree, mosquitoes are not something you have to worry about here in Eugene.

Spiders, however, are a different story.

Most the Bats in Oregon are the "Little Brown Bat"
