yes, Whiteaker has a lot of interesting stores and places to eat. It doesn't really have a good grocery store though but there are some not that far away.

What's wrong with the Apple Market, besides drug dealers that is?

And Haggard I focus on truth, not fantisy. If you find truth negitive, it is your perception I guess.

Oakway and some good hippie stores are almost as close as VRC by the same Skinners Butte Bike Path.

Actually I think that between the Apple and the hippie Barn place as well as the smaller markets around the area you could do just fine.

And it is less than a mile to most anything a hippie or Whitaker freak (affectionate term used to describe Whitaker neighborhood residents.) could want.

Close in shopping is important as many of the Whitaker residents are handicapped, either physically, mentally, or both. It is a good area for those who don’t drive also, as many of the nearly homeless who live there are. Public transportation is abundant.

Although “ The Whit” is not unique in that respect.

Close to everything you need... it's a feel good area. I wouldn't mind my son living there while he attends college. And it's flat... so biking and walking is easier.
Thanks for the tips - I'll pass that info along to him. He has a car, but prefers to walk or bike when possible, so those areas sound good. I've seen them on the map and they looked convenient, but we don't know the neighborhoods very well, so that's helpful.

If you don't mind hills. People who do a lot of walking or biking don't like too many hills. Especially if you have a load of textbooks on your back or a few kids with you like I usually do.

Almost all of the hills are in the Southwest area. Less than 5% of the city. Eugene is mostly flat in a bowl at the end of the valley to the south, and flat all the way to Portland the other way (Except for Turner hill by Salem). The hills are the opposite side of Eugene from Whitaker.

Okay, how about this: Whitaker (not "the Whitaker" and certainly not "the Whit") is an overrated cheese-ball factory. Iky's caused it to be moderately cool in the 90's for about two seconds and everybody, particularly the blowhards at Ninkasi, has been trying to ride that wave ever since.

What is "Iky's"?

Did anybody go to the Sasquatch Brew Fest this weekend? So fun! Lots of great brew - my favorite was the Blue Dog Mead. Wow! And the 2 Towns cider, the bad apple, was also really great.

I'm not a fan of Ninkasi beers. I've tried them all now, and none of them imo are any good. But a lot of people around here are crazy for them. They do seem to be giving back to the community, which is cool. I wish we could get Shiner Bock in Oregon. *sigh*
