We are retired looking for smallish town but near a bigger city, is CG. close enough for regular trips to Eugene? We lived in Brownsville years ago but smaller than we want now. Although we loved the quaint look of the town and old houses.

CG has close to 10,000 population I believe. It's about 20-22 miles to Eugene. Many people make the commute for work daily. Sort of in the middle is Creswell with about half the number of people and about 13 miles into Eugene.

I spent my senior year of high school in Creswell (1982) and was bored to death. Not much to do, and no public transportation to Eugene to see movies or go to the arcades. The only movie theater in town had been closed for years and converted into a warehouse.

The population has doubled since I left. What is life in Creswell like these days?

Population now is right around 5500. There is regular bus service to LCC and into Eugene/Springfield. The one "supermarket" we have is closing its doors real soon (close out sales going on right now). No fast food options other than Subway. Cost of electricity is off the charts and water/sewer is not far behind. The city doesn't seem business friendly at all and the turnover rate for stores and eating establishments is well above that which one should expect.

Are you saying that Creswell used to have a movie theatre? We still enjoy the area though. It's an easy 20 minute commute into Eugene/Springfield and it's really quiet here.

It was closed in 1982, but a few locals told me it used to be a movie theater. At the time, it was a smallish boarded up building on Oregon Ave. I think it was a few doors down from the coin laundry.

Cottage grove has all the basics.. Safeway, BiMart, Walgreens... Even a walmart. Eugene is under a half an hour away for anything fancy.

We also have not one but two decent BBQ places.

I'll never forget what my old neighbor in Eugene told me when I met him while he unpacked his moving truck. He had just moved from Cottage Grove. He said: "I would rather slide down a cheese grater naked than live in Cottage Grove for one more day."

A little extreme. Cottage Grove is a nice town.
