What's the story here?

The City-Data page for Veneta shows a crime rate that is through the roof!

Is Veneta safe? Is the chart a mistake? Or is there something uniquely bad about Veneta?

Meth, meth and meth. Where there's meth there's property crime. Veneta is a run-down little ex-timber town. When low-education people have no options, things go downhill. They just got a new water pipeline and there are lots of McMansions popping up south of town. The main draw of Veneta is to be near the recreation opportunities/ birding/ hunting/boating of Fern Ridge Reservoir (which is drawn down half the year for flood control) Veneta's not violent, just depressed.

So, let's say you live there in town.

Can you leave your doors unlocked in the daytime?

Can the children walk to school? To the store? Play in the street? Or do parents need to hunker down and be on the alert for methheads constantly?

I don't know whether it is the small population or the fact that Veneta is policed by Lane County and does not have a police department of its own... I don't know what but something doesn't seem right with the crime stats on C-D for Veneta.

I don't think anybody should go around leaving windows or doors or vehicles unlocked, regardless of where you live.
