Husband and I are relocating to Eugene or the surrounding area next month. Looking for a rental, but having trouble with pet policies. Most rentals allow only 1-2 pets. We have three cats. Does anyone know of somebody/someplace that would allow our 3? They are all fixed, indoor cats. I only let them out at our current house a couple of times a day supervised in the backyard for a bit of grass and some fresh air. They are 8,11, and 12 years old. We are looking for something under $900, in or around Eugene. Our jobs will be in Eugene, but willing to look outside of the city. Thanks for any and all help

You are looking in the wrong place. Best find a new home for one of the cats.

This was back in the 90s, but some friends of mine with three cats lived in an apartment complex that was off of MLK Jr. Blvd near Autzen Stadium. Maybe not much help as the policies could have changed, but it's worth a shot!

The lions share of the rentals in Eugene are with three or four property management companies. Many of the others are with a dozen smaller companies. Few are owner rented. No matter where you go, it will be the same answer.

If you rent an apartment, there will probably be no dealing with the management. But if you rent a house, I'm sure you could convince some owners to rent to you, with a bigger pet deposit. Maybe a hefty deposit -- but it's better than having to let one of your fur babies go.

They are just cats, and if they are keeping you from having a roof over your head, you need to give some thought to the more serious issues you may have.

Steve may seem unsympathetic, but he's describing the market pretty well.

FWIW, it's not hopeless, but I agree it will be a challenge. The old Westmoreland complex allows cats and doesn't specify a cap on the ad, at least. Remodeled 2 bd in SW Eugene! But be aware those are very small apts. Two people and three cats in there will be quite cozy.

The SFH home idea is good, but going to be a stretch to find something in town at that rate [and many will still cap pets]. A decade ago I would have said look in Springfield, but prices are up there as well and landlords can be pickier about pets. Still, if you don't have to be in Eugene, I'd tend to look at surrounding towns - Veneta, Creswell, Junction City.

Just be careful of the Property Management scams. Springfield much more so than Eugene. They love people with too many pets. They take your application, claim to run a background check, never do and don't refund the $15 to $50 fee when they reject you. Ask to see the background check if you are turned down. They will back up their decision based on the three cats.

By the way ... You have the right to see the background check, and if they did not run it, and did not refund the fee, the attorney Generals office want's to know about it.

You do sound unsympathetic. They are not "just cats". They are family members. Let's not jump to the worst possible scenario before OP has looked at houses to rent.

I still stand by what I said -- if OP looks to rent a house, OP has a decent chance of getting all three cats included.

No you don't. If the landlord rejects based upon what they received from a credit checking company, the landlord has to give you a letter stating that you were rejected based on the information included in that report. You then use the letter to get a copy of the report from the credit rating company.

At this point, you are only legally entitled to a refund if the landlord took an application fee from you when there was no unit available and you did not know that there was currently no unit available, or if he selected another tenant before he ran your application.

Just ask the landlord about the cats before you fill out the application and before you pay the fee. A landlord can most certainly reject for pets and can also reject for lying about pets. So ask before you spend your money applying.

Later on this spring, it starts that the landlord is supposed to tell you how many applications he has already taken.(brand new law)
