Hi all-

I am looking to move to Eugene in early summer (June) and looking at jobs at the University of Oregon. I have a Master's degree in management and 2 years of experience. I am probably looking for some sort of admin assistant/executive assistant position. I have heard it is difficult to break into the university job system, but wondering if anyone has any tips to get considered for one of these positions.

I would love to hear stories (good or bad)!

thanks!

On the one hand, you should expect competition because the UO (and OSU) cranks out a lot of its own grads who tend to want to stick around because they love Eugene/Corvallis. On the other hand, for entry level position the UO hasn't always paid well so people who decide they want to make money tend to move along. My perception is that the UO has made an effort to increase salaries the past few years, at least for mid-management, so that may be changing.

But I will say that your 2 years experience will likely be a significant help. In the current hiring climate direct experience is a big leg up.

What's your particular degree field and area of experience? You can PM me if you don't want to post it publicly - I do still have some connections and insight into how different depts operate depending on what depts you're looking at. Not all depts, certainly, but quite a few. There's a dept who is rumored to have a number of retirements coming up that will likely be looking for significant new blood come spring, for example.

As an aside, Portland State quite frequently has openings if you just wanted to break into OUS and then try and move laterally to OSU/PSU (or even WOU), but I'm not sure I'd recommend that strategy for a variety of reasons.
