Coming to Eugene in a couple of weeks, then vacation rental a couple of weeks with my friend Hannah, do some fun things as I also look to lease a house. We did visit Eugene a couple of years ago, now I am looking to make Eugene my home community. Any suggestions on things going on in June/July that we should be sure to see/do, as well as anything local we should be sure to see/do just to get a feel for Eugene? We do plan on seeing Neil Degrasse Tyson at the Hult June 16, going to the SweetCheeks winery for the June 18 summer solstice event. Will of course go out to ride the dunes in a dune buggy again (that rocked!). Is the whitewater rafting on the McKenzie river fun? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Arriving in Eugene June 15 coming from Duluth MN.

Rafting on the McKenzie river is totally awesome. You can go with a guide (preferred if first time). Typically they use large inflatables that hold 6 to 12 people There are many places to put in, but Finn Rock is one of the most popular. The ride can take a couple of hours through breath taking scenery, lots of rapids (Martin rapids is a class 3) and end up at Leaburg Lake. July and August are the preferred times. You will definitely enjoy it!

One can picnic/lounge on the grass outside the Cuthbert and listen to the shows going on inside. Though the only significant show coming up is Lyle Lovett w/ the Large Band on 7/1. But it can make for a nice evening, especially if you bike over to avoid parking.

I've been tubing on the McKenzie (start upstream around the Riverbend, end at Armitage park) but I've never rafted farther up. Still, tubing is nice on a warm day.

Saturday farmer's market is a must if you're planning on joining in. Lots of people to see and things to eat. The Black Sheep Gathering is June 24-26 at the Fairgrounds, if you're interested in fiber arts or just want to see the animals.

Eugene Weekly just put out their summer guide this week, so while not comprehensive, it covers a pretty wide range of events from neighborhood to broader area:

Outside of the NCAA track and field championships, the US Olympic Trials and the Oregon Country Fair, there is nothing happening in Eugene at all. Seriously, you will be lucky to find a hotel room anywhere within 40 miles.
