Looking to relocate to either WA (Granite Falls area) or OR (cottage Grove area). We found a property that has a lot of what we are looking for near Cottage Grove by the Dorena Lake. Checked out Citi-Data stats and it seems OK. We would appreciate getting feedback from people living there. Weather, overall feel of the town. Positive vibes or more depressed ones? Thanks

I lived in Cottage Grove for the first 7 years of my life, then the last 10 years. It's a quiet town mostly. Mostly positive vibes because a good majority of the townsfolk are potheads. You'd never know it though. The Bohemia mining days festival comes around July and it attracts a few tourists, nothing too severe. The worst you'd see in Cottage Grove is traffic at about 3:00pm. And even then it's not bad compared to Portland or Eugene. Weather is good, nothing too special. Honestly, it's a nice place for your family to grow. The school system there is above average. I've never had any problems with the crime. Homeless people are around there, but as you go further out of town, you see less of them. If you are looking for fun things to do, Cottage Grove is not the place for you. There is mostly just fast food, a few diners, and a bowling alley. If you're into BMX, there is an old BMX track just out of town that is still usable. Plenty of walking trails, two golf courses, a frisbee golf course. The nearest town with any thing to do is Eugene, and it's fairly boring as well. I love it here, but if you've grown up in a big city or places with things to keep you occupied, then Cottage Grove is not likely going to be a fun place for you.

cottage grove is a fantastic place to retire (we did & moved here last december) as long as you bring your money with you.
there are not a lot of high paying jobs here, but plenty of work for non-lazy types.
you can boat on both of our lakes, & there are plenty more larger ones close by (fern ridge, dexter, etc.)
we kayaked down the row river today. a very nice float for a few miles.
no movie theater, but we do have a great community theater (play house). we have season tickets & saw hamlet last thursday. it was excellent!

We're in Eugene, where the water sewer & electric bill combined (EWEB, 3 people, 1 bathroom house) has been averaging $200/mo. My concern about relocating to Cottage Grove is the cost of utilities & the hard water.

I just read on another Oregon thread about the water/sewer bill being over $200/mo.

Does anyone else have any info on this to contribute?
