My family may be moving to Eugene for my job and we are looking into family friendly neighborhoods (safe with good elementary schools, 1 & 4 yo kids). We are hoping to rent (house or apt) for a few months while looking for a house to buy.

I hope to get ideas on nice neighborhoods that are safe and have good schools. Thanks!

Probably the most desirable elementary schools in Eugene are in South Eugene and Ferry Street Bridge. Edison, Parker, and Buena Vista are schools that parents will move in order to get into. (Sorry...lost my way in that sentence!) Corridor, Charlemagne at Fox Hollow, are other good ones, also in South Eugene. Thinking ahead, Roosevelt is a great Middle School.

But these are also the most expensive parts of Eugene in which to buy, and if you can't buy here there are many family friendly neighborhoods and good schools. It would honestly be harder to find a place that wasn't than was. If you are searching homes online here are some generalizations, but NOT meant to imply that other areas aren't good:

Look South of 18th, in South East and South West Eugene (Willamette divides East and West). South East is where many of the above schools are.
Look in neighborhoods on either side of Coburg Road, going North as far as you like. These are also more expensive areas, called Ferry Street Bridge and Gilham by us Realtors. Buena Vista is in FSB.
Look in Santa Clara, out River Road North of Beltline. More suburban, less expensive, middle of the road.
Good luck, and trust your gut!
Sharon
