The only thing I could think of when I read that was maybe since he's retired military that Washington state offers some kind of tax break benefit for him... reduced property taxes or something like that? I know military benefits for retired people differ state to state and often even county to county.

We lived in Washington state. For one long awful year. They certainly do have property tax and depending on where you live - lots of it. They also have sales tax, which my husband always griped about. lol Somehow we'd rather pay federal and state income tax (like we do in Oregon) and not pay sales tax. It just seemed like we were paying an extra $20 every time we did the grocery shopping... and everything else was more expensive, too.
