I understand that state income taxes in Oregon are very high. Among the highest in the nation. Are there any breaks for retired folks?

Also, is there a train from Eugene to the coast? I would love to go to the beach once in a while.

Thanks.

Many of us wish there were a train to the coast. Unfortunately the automobile manufacturers killed them as well as street cars.

Yes there are breaks for elderly tax payers. How that impacts you, specifically, can be calculated by downloading the Oregon tax return and giving it a spin.

I disagree that we have high taxes. Remember that unlike most states, we have no sales tax. Also we don't use auto registration fees as a substitution for income/sales taxes. You need to look at the total tax system. One of the reasons why we have no sales tax is that many feel that lower income residents pay a disportionate portion of their income in taxes with a sales tax, it is regressive.

Thank you so much. I will look at what you said. One more question: There is a bus to the coast, yes?

Sunset Empire Transportation serves northern coastal cities from Astoria to Cannon Beach.
Porter Stage lines connects the Coos Bay area with Eugene.
