Hi all,

My fiancee and me are planning to move into Salem later this year.

I work in Hillsboro (near Portland) and she will be studying in University of Oregon in Eugene - and this is why we are considering Salem as a place to live since it is exactly in the middle, so I can drive to work and she can take public transport.

Since I have heard that South Salem is typically a better place to live compared to North Salem, I am thinking about places in South side of Salem.

This will also work better for her since it will be slightly closer to Eugene.
However, I am a little concerned about the daily commute she would need to do between Salem and Eugene. I checked Amtrak and it seems like they have very few trains during the day and none in the early morning hours. Moreover it is a 1.5 hour commute via Amtrak.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a better and faster way of commuting between Salem and Eugene? Or perhaps another town/city near Salem with better public transport options?

Thanks!

I use to drive from the Beltline and Barger... and it took right at 1 hour to reach So. Salem (Right at Enchanted Forest off the Fwy)
I think The University is probably 5-7 minutes closer
Hope this helps

Thanks for the note.

Driving for 1 hour up and down every day definitely does not seem too bad...

however, she would have to rely on public transport atleast for the first year or so, if not more, and from my research so far it looks like using public transport might take more than 1 hour -

also do you happen to know of good and fast bus/train options to commute between eugene and south salem?

i checked amtrak but they do not have service from salem to eugene in the mornings and also back in the evenings (which is basically what we would need).

Maybe you could move to Eugene and commute but that's a really long drive. Can she get into Willamette University in Salem?

Valley Van Pool currently has one route that runs Salem to Eugene, but it may stop running as of July 1st. You could also look at what Cherriots (http://www.cherriotsrideshare.org/Carpool_Vanpool_Transit.html - broken link) (Salem Bus) has to offer in terms of carpool information.
