I currently live in Red Bluff, CA and love it to pieces but, having COPD, I'm probably going to have to move where summers are cooler. I do not drive so crime esp. gang activity is very important (pedestrians and bus riders are usually most victimized... I'm nervous about Portland); I like quiet and small town feeling but also want access to major stores and restaurants. I noticed the rents were generally lower in Salem but I like the college town atmosphere too. I appreciate your imput... thanks!

Hi, Dalbert

I just wanted to tell you, that Salem sucks!!! I've been living here for 3 years. The people are rude but you can find nice people but its really rare. Also if you don't know anybody here since childhood they won't talk to you, that goes with trying to find a job too. If I was you, I would go with Eugene.

Both Towns have their problems.... I lived in Eugene.... and have family in Salem.... and I would say that from my point of view giving the 2 cities... I would pick Salem..... and if I had to pick between Portland, Salem and Eugene.... I would pick Portland!!

Portland has more gang activity. Salem or Eugene would be a toss up for your wants or needs. jmho

Salem has a bus to get around and you should pick south Salem, it's a lot quieter, more safe. I liked living there. I've never been to Eugene.

ugh!! very boring here in Salem. I regret the fact that I moved out of Chicago for this. They drive pretty slow, under the speed limit. I am kinda wondering why they don't get pulled over by police. No good food either, price are expensive and not worth it. I guess, if you are more of an outdoorsy type of person, you'll like it here. And yes, people are rude in a stupid kind of way. That is why i am moving out of here after relocating from Chicago 6 mos ago.

I am sure the boring, stupid, rude folks from Salem are going to be sorry when you leave their no taste, slow driving city.
Best of luck on your next location

I have been to Salem a number of times and still have no impression of the city, neither good nor bad. I will say that I am quite certain Eugene is a much more interesting place.
