I'm interested in learning the background and translation of this old family/birthday song.

My maternal grand parents were Danish and Norwegian, and every birthday celebrated was capped with everyone singing this certain song.

It was [phonetically pronounced] "hanska leeba", repeated three times. Then there was a chorus that went,"Hoorah! Hoorah!"

Is anyone from this area of Europe familiar with this song?

Never heard of it.
It wasn't "Ja må han leva",was it?
I don't know if the danes and norwegians sing that one though.

Is it "Hurra for deg som fyller ditt år!" ?

That is the Norwegian song. I don't know any other.

I think it's "han skal leve"

It's a Danish song.

"Hun skal leve, hun skal leve, hun skal leve, højt hurra.
Hurra, hurra, den skål, den var bra.
Hurra, hurra, den skål, den var bra.
Hun skal leve (ja, hun ska’),
hun skal leve (ja, hun ska’),
Hun skal leve så hurraaaaaa.
lenge leve, HURRA, HURRA, HURRA!!"

Han skal leve is " he shall live"
"hun" is her, and "han" means him, so it's interchangeable.

høyt hurra means "loud hurra"

Hurra, hurra, den skål, den var bra. is basically hurra, hurra, loud cheers, that's good

Danish isn't my forte, but Danish and Norwegian are similar.

Hope it helps

We sing the dutch version of it on every birthday: Maybe Google can translate it

Lang zal ze leven,
Lang zal ze leven,
Lang zal ze leven in de gloria
in de glo-ri-a
In de glo-ri-a

Hiep hiep hiep
Hoera!
Hiep hiep hiep
Hoera!
Hiep hie hiep
Hoera!
