Hostel, or hostile? LOL Both would be appropriate word associations!

Bratislava is without a doubt the ugliest European city I have ever seen. If anyone has any vestiges of romance in their mind about Soviet ideals, one trip there will cure you.

I think Bratislava is a lovely city and by no means dull. Good nightlife, nice (but small) historical city centre, some nice neighborhoods and many things to see and do. I really don't see how can someone consider it ugly, maybe some parts of it are but which city doesn't have those, seriously.

To be fair, I was there twenty years ago.

But it was probably the ugliest city I had ever seen - literally. It would have had to have experienced some major changes since then, and hopefully it has. It was HORRIBLE twenty years ago - gray, drab, poverty stricken, and in chaos after the fall of the Soviet Union.

It obviously did experience major changes as 20 years ago it wasn't even in the same country. I've been through many different cities in Europe and Australia and I really wouldn't say that Bratislava is a dull or an ugly city.

I've been to Bratislava less than two years ago. You can definitely tell who got the short end of the stick when it came to dissolution of Czechoslovakia .

It has a good old city center though (it is tiny, but its nice), but everything else is still ugly socialist concrete jungle. on the upside - the beer is great, the city itself is extremely cheap, and the local women are gorgeous.

my vote goes for any large industrial city of the NRW region in Germany. Essen, Dortmund, you name it -- not much to see. I didn't care much for Frankfurt either.

How can no one mention BIRMINGHAM?

It's a very dull & generic city.

Oslo is not a large city. I don't see how it could be a candidate. Plus it is not boring. Let me push you down the Holmenkollen ski jump and check your pulse.

If you are talking about nightclubs, then yes, compared to many European cities it is boring especially since overpriced cocktails and thunderous dance music are the litmus of excitement.

One more for Oslo. Went to Norway as a tourist, the rest of Norway is incredible, but next time I'll skip Oslo. The museums were great since I've been really into Vikings since I was a little kid, but "once is enough" when it comes to most museums. And it's the most expensive city in the world. Fancy that!
