But there are some "Austrians" saying there is no such thing as Austrian, they're basically Germans.
Very interesting!
Yes, there is a tiny minority of Austrians that are German nationalists. They are mostly organised in Burschenschaften and/or the Identitäre Bewegung. Consequently, you can find a lot of people denying the existence of the Austrian nation within the leadership of the FPÖ. One of them is presidential candidate Norbert Hofer.
The great majority of far-right voters are working-class people that can't be bothered with this "Deutschtümelei", though.
Austrians and Germans share a very entangled past and I guess they are pretty similar in culture and their political systems but Germany and Austria are still countries in their own right. No one would say Irish and British people are both "British" or that Americans are basically British, just because they speak the same language.
That said, in my opinion there is more that unites Germany and Austria than divides. German-speaking Switzerland is a different case since they've been neutral since forever and tried to isolate themselves from the rest of the German speaking world and the rest of Europe.
( Pay attention - the OP is not asking whether Austria and Germany are ONE and the SAME country)))
No, but you seem to believe that Austria is still a part of Germany, like it was only for 7 years 1938 till 1945, during the WWII. Austrians do not see themselves as Austrian Germans, they are Austrians, only.
