Belgrade is a big city and is definitely very different from Thessaloniki.

visited a good friend in.veles macedonia last september. i never imagined visiting macedonia but i thoight it must be so different from the typical tourist destinations like spain france or italy. we drove through quite a bit of this smallish country. there was some nice mountain scenery and lake ogrid was the nicest place isaw in the country.food was unbelievably cheap. fact is though there is virtually no tourist infratucture. the roads and public transport is nothing like western europe and really is very very backward. my friend would explain to me that a typical macedonian wage is as low as 150 to 200 euros a monrh and u can certainly see that most people really struggle. i was lucky to have my local friend drive me everywhere as i think it would be next to impossible to travel through the country with its severely limitted and extremely outdated public transport. concerning skopje it is a very small city be the neglected river varda. got some great views of the city going up one of the mountains by car and then by cable car. i remember the was a cross and a great big flag on top of the mountain. there is very little in terms of entertainmwnt and shopping in skopje. all those newish monuments they have built around alexander the great square and varda river are interesting but the do look very artificial. i certainly didnt regret visiting macedonia as it was so different. but its really not a place i would be rushung to visit again. too small geographically and population wise. theres just not much to do at all.

How would you differentiate the 'Eastern European' experience and the 'Balkan' experience?

Which then begs the question, what's the vibe in Thessaloniki?

Macedonian music is pretty cool. Similar to Albanian and Bosnian music, kinda like a mixture of Eastern European and Middle Eastern sounds.
