That's right. It's easy to understand.

Madrid is prominent?
No way, number of tourists and world attention dropped 40 percent last year.
Barcelona is getting prominent, the 10th World Destination.
Madrid receives billions in institutional and central government investments, but their weather sucks, "no hay playa" (no beaches), etc.
Also, Madrid is farther away from Europe.
Madrid is a very nice destination, but more geared to Spanish/Latin tourism, what I mean is that the city is devoid of what many Europeans/Tourists look in Spain: sea, beaches, med, cruises, nearness to European destinations, etc.

Madrid is about a two-hours flight from London, Amsterdam or Frankfurt.
For instance, a journey lasting twenty hours is enough to hit northern Netherlands by car.

All of Spain is in trouble! Catalonia has the highest tax rate in all of Spain. Catalans have long been supporting the rest of Spain since the 20th century under Franco. Is precisely why Catalans are seeking independence from the rest of Spain. Drive in Catalonia and notice the excessive toll roads as compared to the rest of Spain. They are tired of supporting the rest of the country while their own lifestyles have diminished. Madrid is the capitol and will always be #1 under the eyes of government and receive most of the monetary benefits while Catalonia is suffering. Free Catalonia!!!!

Nah, it's city-data. Facts don't count and Spain is poor anyway

As a capital, Madrid doesn't seem to be as disconnected from the rest of Spain as people make it sound on this forum. It's not a very condescending place at all. It's a worldly city but it seems to attract mostly Spaniards from other parts of the country more than it does students and foreigners and all of their investments. I hung around Lavapies for a couple of weeks and it feels very Spain-y despite being in the centre of Madrid. Barcelona has a bigger variety of people if I remember my experiences there correctly, and certainly more 'hey look at me!' than Madrid.

My relatives living in Catalonia disagree with your ideas, health system sucks there and people have to wait months for surgery... Is that rich then? Also Catalonia wasted a lot of money is stupid things like embassies, local police, translators into Spanish, local train company, etc... maybe Catalonia should know how to do things better and stop blaming the rest of Spanish humans.
