Most Americans in Spain speak Spanish
For example, if they are a family then "junior" tries his Spanish, or whoever is more fluent.
I must say that their Spanish is passable, they can get around.
Many French also speak Spanish.
Somebody said that immigrants in Spain do not have language skills, wrong.
Latins, South Americans mostly, have better English skills that Spanish because they don't dub.
Many Africans also.
I don't think that anybody resent the presence of the English language, maybe 50 years ago and due to political or propaganda reasons.
German isn't as popular as English, because English is the de facto international language of business and trade. It has over 340 million native speakers and over 420 million L2 speakers - German doesn't even compare in terms of numbers.
German is still spoken by a lot of people in Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic though. Over 50% of people in the Netherlands and Denmark can speak German.
For schools in England what are the most popular foreign language courses?
Its a nice sounding language as long as you are not yelling.
Depends on the dialect. Some dialects sound OK, but certainly not nice to me. High German (which is the one that is often made fun of in movies etc.) sounds ugly to my ears as well, despite being German myself. I read and write a lot in German, but I am happy I don't have to hear it spoken anymore. Portuguese is so much nicer Even American English sounds nicer to my ears.
Why wouldn't German be more popular than English since Germany seems to be more of a "European power house" than England
English is popular because of the Brtish Empire, in Asia (India, Pakistan, Burma, Singapore etc), in Africa, down under & US / Canada. The British Empire existed at a time when the world was shrinking and its these circumstances that has resulted in the domination of the language ie by chance.
^ I'm surprised folks aren't more annoyed about it really.
