It's pretty naive to think that everyone on the US lives in the same kind of house. I'd doubt that even 1% of the population would live in something that could be classified as a McMansion. And most of those lost them in the housing bust a few years back, when they could no longer afford to pay their huge mortgage bills.
I don't think everyone does.. stereotypes are not usually a good portrayal of reality.

This is how it works, yet there is always a misconception here and on other forums that American expats pay taxes twice.

This is a complete BS.

But yes, you've to pay an accountant to file your US tax return.
I have had no problem filling out my taxes myself. I never made the equivalent of $100k and my husband's income doesn't count with the IRS.

I don't know the stats for the rest of Europe but there are about 200,000 Americans living in the UK.

Funny calling Europeans snobbish when Americans are known worldwide for their arrogance.

Do Europeans envy the American lifestyle?

Not as much as people in Sudan, North Korea, Cuba, Honduras, and a host of other grim places.

The North American, European, and Australian (plus NZ) lifestyles have more in common than not. You cannot go wrong in any of them.

Nobody envies the American lifestyle.
They might envy the American standard of living.

We have 300 million people, 200,000 isn't that big of a number.
And I wasn't talking about all Europeans but Europeans who are snobbish.

Americans are not big on traveling or moving abroad. Most don't even have a passport, so it's no wonder.

Honestly a lot of people do live in "McMansions"

I actually live in one, built in 1991, very nice place and don't view older/historic homes anyway better or worse.

I was replying to someone who said Europe is not on Americans radar as a place to live. Untrue. And the 200K is only the UK, not all of Europe.

That's not most people, still. It also varies a lot by region.
