I tend to avoid big cities when I travel. How about including some smaller ones: Cluj-Napoca (Romania), Dubrovnik (Croatia), etc.?

Probably no one on this forum has been to all of these. I'm going to Belgrade and Sarajevo later this month, though. Sarajevo looks beautiful and oh so interesting. Belgrade looks a bit ugly, but apparently is the place to be if you are looking to socialize.

I've heard that too...that Belgrade has some of the best nightlife of the region, by far.
But I also read on wikitravel, that the nightlife now closes at 1am. A relatively recent change, whereas previously it was all night, and from what I heard, every night of the week.

I see what you mean on Wikitravel. A quick Google search doesn't turn up anything official, but a bunch of copy+pasted "most cafes and bars are open until 1AM every night", so I guess it must be true. I can confirm in the future.

That's my choice.

"Balkan area" was the inclusive term used to capture all the cities in the greater region.
Regardless if its Balkan or not, it's in the "Balkan Area" list, so feel free to rank it up at the top or bottom, or however you feel about it accordingly.
