I did 8 full days in Italy. I arrived Saturday morning and left the next Sunday morning. For my trip, I flew in and out of Milan. It was courtesy of a mistake fare, so I had to book quickly without too much time to think. Looking back, I wished I had booked my flight open jaw because I had to circle around, which wastes time. I would also have liked to stay in Florence another day. My itinerary was as follows:
Day 1 - Morning/early afternoon in Milan - Visited the Doumo, missed out on seeing the Last Supper. Took the late afternoon train to Venice.
Day 2 - Long day in Venice - I had already settled in late in the previous day. I just hit the ground running and walked all over the city. Took the overnight train to Rome.
Day 3-7 - Rome, including day trip to Pompeii. I probably could've knocked a day off and given it to Florence.
Day 8 - Long day in Florence (I know!) - Walking tour of the city, and a visit to the Accademia. I lucked out because it was free that day.
I would wander around Sardinia. I don't know anything about, so I'm not sure where exactly. If it's a paid trip I'm willing to throw darts at the map and just see what happens.
I'd vote for staying in one region instead of rushing through places that shouldn't be rushed. Do a week in Florence and take day trips to Lucca and Siena and the wine country. You'll discover a lot more about the place than you could ever appreciate changing cities every two days.
You should check out Tuscany (Florence, Sienna) and then go South to Rome and Naples. Italy is very beautiful, so it is better to choose not more than 3-4 cities and enjoy them profoundly with all their beauty, spirit, history and food than to rush over the most popular touristic spots.
