I couldn't say for sure. But this one pair of guys seemed to be trying to look young and cool, wearing funky styles. They really stuck out, because nobody wears hipster clothes in my town, lol! And I heard them complaining about being 40 and feeling "old" and starting to have aches and pains.

I agree. I've been to Sheung Wan a number of times, as I have a good friend who lives in that neighborhood. "Hipster" is not a word I would ever define it though. Yeah, just feels old-fashioned Chinese, in a spot that some of the wealthier expats in HK might move over, due to it's excellent location and slightly cheaper rents than Central.

Doesn't sound hipster at all. You really have to be part of that community. I strongly associate it with neighborhoods.

I don't think you could have an old 40-year-old hipster alone and by himself in a small town. The way you describe them as a pair of guys at 40-years-old, it sounds more like a gay couple. Even moreso if they are wearing 'funky styles'.

Hipsters don't dress very funky. But I could completely see a gay couple around the age of 40 trying to wear funky or hip clothes. But they wouldn't be hipster at all.

I guess it depends on how we define "funky". I call the typical hipster glasses "funky". But who knows? I haven't noticed a hipster community in my town at all.

Well, I think you are too focused on clothing or attire. That doesn't define a hipster, any more than ripped jeans defines who is or who isn't a rock musician.

I thought you said earlier it was partly about clothing, a certain look. Vintage clothes are popular with hipsters, and vintage is definitely "funky".

Todays hipsters has nothing to do with the original hipsters from the 1940s.

Well, there is a look to being a rock star too, but someone dressing like a rock star, doesn't by default make him/her a rock star. It makes him someone who LOOKS like a rock star.

They are two different things. Same with hipsters, and people who might occasionally wear some clothing that might possibly be popular with hipsters as well.

Yeah. Helsinki has been overrun by them. The hipster capital north of Berlin.

Is there a capital in Europe that isn't full of hipsters? In my experience, not really. I think in bigger cities where there are more people, you always get that younger crowd which wants to stand out. Being a "hipster" is one way to achieve that, I guess.
