I'm interested in visiting Sweden for a month or two, and would rather stay in Göteborg with the occasional trip to Stockholm. Is there anything crime wise I need to know about? What areas to avoid? While I'm at it, should places like Malmö be avoided at all costs?

Don't know much about Göteborg, but the city centre of Malmö was perfectly safe when I visited. Frankly, crime in general isn't that much of an issue in Sweden.

See, this is what I had thought until I began reading articles about Muslim immigrants (mainly in Malmö) and how Sweden's government just looks the other way when it comes to crime. I've been wanting to visit Sweden since I was a child, but I don't want my eventual visit to be ruined by staying in the wrong city.
The Muslims in Sweden are quite frankly not a problem in the country. They are peaceful people and the ones that move to Sweden are appreciative of the quality of life there. They both enjoy and facilitate learning opportunity at the free universities, they run volunteer organizations, and they do not make up the same group that you might think they are. Profiling people is the problem. If Sweden becomes increasingly more muslim %, it doesn't mean Sweden will be part of Saudi Arabia

You probably won´t visit South Central if you go to L.A., so why would you go to bad areas in other countries?
Besides, Sweden isn´t like the US and I seriously doubt you would have any problems if you do visit the bad areas.

I can guarantee you that Sweden is as safe as a Western European country can be. These problems with immigrants rioting are extremely rare and isolated events. I'm 100% sure that any area in Gothenburg or Malmö is safer than the rowdy areas in Vancouver.
IF something would happen, it's 5 minutes later in the news and you would know about it. There's no cities in Sweden to avoid because of safety.
Both Malmö and Gothenburg are very safe cities, and lovely places unless you are a white supremacist bigot. Malmö fades a bit though as its only a 15 minute train ride from far superior Copenhagen.

Sweden is as safe as safe can be, I went to malmo walked around, went to the downtown looking for a night club, ended up going home at 3 am, no cab just walked (I am a woman) and NOTHING HAPPENED TO ME, the men I saw on the street didnt even look at me!

Sweden's a big place. There's a lot more to it than Malmo, Stockholm and Goteborg.
