I just came across this report of a person who visited Kazan and loved it. He compares it with St. Pet in a way, but sees more positive feature as in more even distribution of wealth, absence of contrasts between "the rich and the poor," and he thinks that Kazan doesn't suffer from symptoms of "provincial city."
On top of that he liked people there ( warm, down to earth,) and one more bonus - everything ( for travelers) is written in three languages - Russian, Tatar and English.
I am not familiar with the place at all, but judging by a lot of pictures here - it looks quite appealing.
1. Ufa (knew somebody from there)
2. Omsk (knew somebody from there)
3. Yekaterinaburg (knew somebody from there)
4. Magadan (remember that from "Long Way Around" a documentary featuring Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman where they ride around the world on motorcycles including through Russia up to Magadan before crossing on plane to Alaska)
5. Novgorod (read about this city when reading Russian history, one of the older cities in Russia)
6. Khabarovsk (not far from the border with China)
7. Vladivostok (lots of Asians know about this city- it is a port city)
8. Murmansk (heard about this city when back in 1978 a Korean Airlines Flight 902 was shot down and had to make emergency landing near here when, at that time, it strayed into Soviet territory at that time, not to be confused with Korean Airlines Flight 007 which happened in 1983 at the opposite end of Russia-closer to Sakhalin Island north of Japan)
9. Sochi (resort in Russia and became even more known due to the 2014 Winter Olympics)
10. Novosibirsk (had some friends who had lived there)
