The KITLG snp has been proven to be unreliable when determining hair color, just FYI.
One problem with you. Do you have a clue of what you're talking about? I think not. Studies about the KITLG (blonde hair gene) have been done by the Stanford University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. An adult who has dark brown hair may still be a carrier of the KITLG. You are confused.
why do americans talk SO MUCH about race and skin color?
what an ugly habit to have
and it's not just the white ones that think they're europeans because they follow certain parameter based on hollywood stereotypes of different european nationalities, but also americans of other colors truly can't shut up about skin color and race either.... black americans for example are like broken records with the race/skin color topic!

Because it's a fun pastime for some Americans and cultural I doubt Americans will adjust our habits not to offend your sensibilities. hahaha. it's a cultural quirk. The fact that it bothers you so much is interesting. Although I have to admit some people take it too far.
Americans are rootless in a multicultural society, and clinch very much to their ancestry, even try to find traits in themselves explained in their genes. "I'm Irish, so I can handle alcohol". Some try from their haplotypes and grandma's stories find their urheimat, some mythical ancestral homland where their roots are. We even have a genealogy subforum on C-D, something that would be completely unfathomable in Europe, as already the thought reeks of nazi Germany. Not that's the case, but that's how people feel about these things here. Our roots are in our very old cultures, and many people don't even know anything about their ancestry beyond their grandparents parents.
Secondly, some Americans believe quite stupidly, that the Old World would be really old-fashioned and monolithic, filled with people who have lived in the same village for hundreds of years, never moved and interacted with others, creating areal genetical and behavioral differences in people. This might be somewhat true for two countries, Italy and Spain, but not for the others. Think, as Americans are mobile and have always moved across a very large landmass (not to even mention that they moved across a vast ocean anyway), what makes you think that Europeans haven't moved at all on a much smaller but much more densely populated landmass? Just doesn't make sense. For example, probably some of my ancestors fought in the 30 Years War. What if my ancestor raped some woman in Prague or Munich, and I have a distant relative there? As I know I have a line of priests in my family, what if someone of them were protestants fleeing from France? I might have French blood. My ancestors might been Hansa traders, maybe I have German blood? Or Russian? Or Polish? Europeans have always been mobile, and there simply aren't any different "types" of Europeans, like breeds in dogs.

I've heard this but don't completely agree there is a pattern however the areas of the country where people are most likely to identify American as ancestry are areas that had a high proportion of people with Scotch-Irish, Scottish, and English ancestry who where mostly portestant and weren't exactly known to be inclusive.
Ariete, I don't find Americans to be "rootless" (certainly not compared to Canadians! ), at least not for a new world country.
I do agree with you that the "Kiss me I'm Irish/Italian/German/Polish" stuff can seem a bit ridiculous... but it doesn't really exist in order to fill a hypothetical vacuum caused by an absence of true Americana.
Americana definitely does exist.
