Piedmont / liguria is striking for sure, but southern France along the coast is definitely sheltered from oceanic and northern influences by massif central and the Alps, isn't it ?
It is very clear when you look at a weather map of France in fall / winter / spring in case of atlantic low: the north and center of the country are under rainy conditions while the south is windy and dry.
Actually, the Rhone Valley even enhances this difference with the mistral wind. Don't forget that montelimar actually has 2400 hours of sunshine per year.
