There are overlapping similarities. One will find similarities between Spanish speaking Latin America and Portugal, but they will also find some differences. Roman Catholicism influence on culture will be a noticeable trait similarity. Certain foods, and traditions, and due to the Romance language connection sharing "Latin" roots that will be noticeable. Some people who speak Spanish can understand Portuguese and vice versa.
Also Galicia region of Spain and Galician people has some overlapping similarities with Portugal and Portuguese people and culture, especially due to the close proximity between them. Gallegos have so many similarities with Portugal.
What are those specific similarities? Specific foods, specific traditions, and specific similarities in vocabulary etc. Which city of Portugal and Galicia are you comparing? Anyone can read Wikipedia and come up with the above.
Argentina and Uruguay had both huge Galician immigration, much more people from there than all other provinces of Spain together and they had/have the intermix with Portuguese/Brazilians in the borders (more Uruguay) I guess they are the closer.
In the language at least for Brazilians the Spanish spoken in the Rio de la Plata area (Buenos Aires and Montevideo) is the easier to understand.
Keep in mind they are much more of Spanish and Italian inffluence, but that Argentines / Uruguayan accent that everbody think is so Italian in the truth is very galician/portuguese.

Neuling it says it can take up to 5 generations in some cases a that's a bit different.
Based on what I've read a significant factor is that 55% of children of unskilled laborers continue with the same occupations as their parents which is significantly higher than the OCDE average of 37%. The up to 5 generations number they throw out is assuming all variables continue as now. Upward mobility among the poorest in Portugal has always been a problem especially if a person lacks "appropriate" social skills and etiquette.

from reading this i gather some portuguese guy moved to the USA and became fixated on americas obsession with skin color and race labels and since hes portuguese he decides to look down on mexicans because ignormus all over the US might associate Portugal with mexico.
