Well, we always knew that much - that it's a big question of Russia-Germany relations, however I'd like to point at one more "elephant" in the room, ( as far as European affairs go,) in whose existence the likes of Friedman refuse to believe, apparently. And that is Great Britain and her internal split; where it's going to stand - with its off-shoot (i.e. the US) or Old Europe, with which it shares her roots.
But those decisions are going to be made; it's coming.
With all the chaos that NATO/US were sowing lately in the Middle East ( and Friedman admits it himself,) with all the refugees pouring to Europe's shores as the result of it, those are going to be more and more pressing matters.
I suspect that after relatively quiet 2015, the next year is going to be full of events yet again.
P.S. Ramzes55, b.t.w. at 4.01 the Ru translation is incorrect. It's not "they ( Ukrainians) will try to do everything to not to provoke the wrath of the US," but "they do everything to draw the US in ( "втянуть США в конфликт.") So he is saying that Ukrainians are doing everything correctly, trying to make Americans to get involved in the conflict - that's the smart way to go in this situation ( for Ukrainians.)
No one cares about Russia right now. It's poor and largely irrelevent. The only reason anyone cares is because Putin is deranged and because the military is still reasonably powerful. But Europe and the West have bigger issues at the moment, unless Putin is really crazy and tries to invade the rest of Ukraine, or if he marches on the Baltics.
But the Russian economy is so weak at the moment, I don't think Putin could invade more countries even if he wants to do so.

yeah, because every time the US is involved, the matter is solved smoothly, and never made things worse.

Saying Russia might march on the Baltics is like predicting the US will invade Canada.
Putin is not deranged at all. He knows exactly what he is doing. Just because it doesn't agree with the almighty west (which by the way caused way more harm to the world than Russia or North Korea) doesn't mean he is crazy.

To make up for that, they have destabilised the Middle East for the next 100 years and do nothing to stop that.
That means nothing for Eastern Europeans. The only thing that matters for them, is that the US protects them from big bad Russia. So the US in their book is a "good guy" and they will be always their stooges.
Up to a certain degree I can understand them, but they are missing a bigger picture, unfortunately.
And the bigger picture is, that for example the whole ordeal with Syria was created in order to hurt Russian interests.
