I was an engineering manager for a major US company. No way ever to go there. You end up trapped and can't get out. And in the end it is a disaster.
What can you ever do to fix it. Buy back 10 million cars? $200 billion dollars?
Practically you can't fix it because your buyer is not going to bring in their car so you can make it perform badly. They would have to be nuts. So you end up buying it back. then what do you do with it. Resell it as a dog? In a month some entrepreneur will be selling the old software to restore performance.
I would think everyone in authority on this one should go to jail...for at least a while. If you did not have sense enough to quit you deserve it. Any that did quit or retire should be brought back.

It's ironic and hypocritical when Germany seems such a big believer in Global Warming to have its largest company be such a cheater and polluter of the air and environment.
Actually the amazing thing is they continued to do it. One would have thought that a rational operation would have either figured out how to fix the thing in a year or two or three or discontinued the product line to cut the losses.
These guy were simply mad...out of their minds. Hang them...for blatant stupidity if nothing else.
Volkswagen is a huge international corporation. When they have meetings they are held in English.
It in no way represents Germany or the German people. No more so than Chrysler represents the people of USA.

That is true. I guess Americans have forgotten about Enron. It was the 7th-largest company in the US 15 years ago. The huge scandal even brought down their auditor, Arthur Andersen.
