The Nice dialect is related to Occitan, Garibaldi was born there, when Italy did not exist, that's why thera are squares all around. He might be also Brazilian for all that I know, since he lived there a large part of his existence.

The Niçard has lots of similarities with Italian (and all related sub-languages) to the point I can understand most of what's written in Niçard even though I have no connection whatsoever with the region or the language (apart from speaking natively Italian).
