Actually most people I know have 2 children or some three. It's true though, that people seem to have children at an older age. My parents were in their late teens early twenty's, and nowadays it's more and more common to have children at early or even late 30's.

But, at least for the NL, I think it has more to do with the high costs of having children so people are more likely to wait until they made a career for themselves and bring home a reasonable paycheck every month.

Of course Most families I know have 2-4 children, but also know couples who have chosen not to have any kids. Actually I don't know anyone who would have just one child and saying that this is enough.

It is a perception that exists but not factual there actually isn't a correlation.
