Prior to this current wave of islamic extremism, what issues did Europe have with moslem migrants?

Like what issues did Germany have with the Turkish immigrants that they themselves brought in for temporary work? Was it crime committed by Turks, using up too much welfare? Or was it more like the Germans just did not want the Turks there for too long, and just wanted them out? Was it an issue of taking all the jobs from Germans?

What about France and its Maghrebi migrants? Are the ethnic neighborhoods very violent? Is it plagued by drugs? Is their prison population largely moslem? Do they send all the money they make overseas?

What about the other countries?

I remember France, Paris mainly, I think, had always had terrorism scares.(Not "always" in terms of a lot of frequency, but meaning -- it's not a new phenom., and had been something authorities had to be vigilant about for decades.) The airport was the site of bomb scares back in the 80's, and that phenomenon extended back into the 70's, as well. (I don't know when it started.) I don't remember there being any significant issues with the Turkish workers, except garden-variety racist comments or jokes among working-class types, blue-collar workers. Just dumb stuff. That is my temporary-visitor's-eye-view. And some of those "Turkish" workers around Europe were actually Yugoslavs. They were Europeans.

I recall how in September 1963, when I came to hitchhike through continental Europe at the age of sixteen, I had to find a train out of Paris: and, found myself at la Gar du nord. Straight away, I was dodging a large group of arabs that seemed to be stalking me. Anyway, I quickly found refuge in joining a small party of fellow-British backpackers. You couldn't make it up

Why are train stations a thing? The New Year's Eve incident in Cologne centered around the train station, too. I don't know about the other cities where there were similar incidents. But why hang around train stations?

Central location. Lot`s of people coming and going, waiting- perfect for homeless, beggars, pickpockets and dealers. Stores are open there when everything else is closed. You can buy alcohol there when all the other places are closed. You can get out of the weather. Lot´s of benches to sit on...

For a variety of reasons. They are usually crowded, especially on NYE when people commute from the suburbs to the centre. You can hide in plain sight if you want to do illegal deeds. Secondly, they are good meeting spots when people coming from all around the city have to go via the train station. Thirdly, especially on holidays when malls are closed, train stations have usually shops and fast-food joints which are open. And finally in winter they offer a heated environment.

Most of the assaults in Helsinki on NYE happened in the tunnel complex linking the train station to the metro station:

Generally, no. Except for the ones that end up trying to pickpocket tourists they think will fall for their ploy to offer assistance, help you find what you're looking for, whatever.
