I live in Lanzarote and lived in Fuerteventura for a while. Both are nice islands to visit, they should be on the list too. I've never been to Tenerife, but have been to Gran Canaria. I was only there to sort out paperwork at the consulate, so didn't get to see much during my 2 day stay. I think I did a bit of shopping, there was a better selection of stores there than where I was living.
That might be an interesting poll as well, comparing islands. But, I think we'd be lucky enough to have people who've even visited the two main cities/islands, let along visit all the islands to compare.
I would prefer Tenerife, because there are more things to visit and nature is better, you have the Teide, the island is green and it is more exotic.
Gran Canaria is not bad, but landscapes are not beautiful, a couple of nice villages and a good beach, the dunes and that is all.
This helps picture a lot! Granted we don't have a lot of voters yet in the poll. But no one has picked Gran Canaria over Tenerife.
Which one has the most city beaches, by the way? Or half way decent city beaches, anyways? I heard that Gran Canaria does, but maybe its not that great?
Thanks for the post though, helps me understand the difference a little more.
I've alway been curious about the Canaries. They're relatively near an island that I love, Madeira. But then I see remarks like the above and others as brutally as candid, and I'm put off. I don't like package tour places and endless commercialized beaches. So I wonder. Perhaps some of the other lesser known and visited islands may be worth a trip.
I'm not sure the reality of these two cities in the Canaries, but with nearly a million people in each city, there is no possible way that its just packed tourist hotels.

I'm from Spain, I've never been there and I don't want to do so, as I like Balearic islands or elsewhere in the eastern coast of mainland Spain because I prefer real temperate Mediterranean climate rather than subtropical crap.

100% sincere. I will never put my foot on those islands.
I can go to hundreds of other islands instead.
I read your previous post about why don't you like those islans, but it depends on what kind of tourism you do and you are looking for, it is true that you find all that negativities but Spanish people feel it different, but you can choose other options too and enjoy the cities and the culture apart from the pubs and the bad stuff, I suppose the language helps and the vacation concept there is different too.
I'm heading back to Tenerife for 2 weeks next February, because for family reasons (and financial reasons too, for an EU citizen the Canary islands are a priceworthy winter destination, even if the sun is not as hot as in the Caribbean) I will not make a long trip this winter. The Canary islands are very practical for an European, they are part of Spain so in the €urozone, no need for a passport, 4 hours fligt instead of 12 hours for CR for instance (where I went last year) and I pay 400 € for 2 weeks for a high standing apartment (through "Bed y Casa") instead of 600 € for 2 weeks in Puerto Viejo , CR , for a ramschackle cabin. But I hope we won't stay in Tenerife (been there 2 times already) and head to Gomera and Hierro. Does someone out there know if there are ferries to Hierro island ?
I'm going to Tenerife this weekend! (in bcn now) been traveling for a month! I can't wait...
