One reason for women to smoke is to meet men.

I'm a woman in Spain, and yes I smoke. I don't notice women smoking more than men. Seems about equal to me.

The smokers here don't spit like the smokers in China. In China, they smoke in gyms and restaurants. Here it's mainly outside. I gave someone a dirty look and yelled at him when I saw him smoke in a locker room in China.

There's been a smoking ban in Spain for several years now. Many restaurants and bars do have smoking areas set up outside, though.

Heck, I barely even smoke in my house anymore. I go outside, even at home. :P

But I have not noticed more women smokers than men. Come to think of it, I think more people I know are non or ex smokers than smokers.

Mediterranean people smoke more than everybody else, especially Greeks and Turks. They live longer though...it doesn't make sense does it?

Maybe the statitiscs are so high because of tourists, since tobacco in Spain is cheap compared to neighbouring countries some may hoard cigarrete packs.

For example, in Norway a box costs 10€ and 9€ in UK, while in Spain is 4€ or so.

More so if you buy it duty free.

I am just talking out of total ignorance since I do not smoke.

Spain received some 60 million tourists, many from those countries.

In most other countries where smoking is prevalent it is usually the men who smoke more than women, the ratio often being 2:1. In Spain it is 1:1.

The regional variation is tremendous. It is prevalent in the tobacco growing states like Kentucky, North Carolina and the poor southern states like Alabama and Mississippi. But it is much less common in the North east and when I was in Denver, Colorado I saw just 2 people smokign the whole week. Most were engaged in physical sports.

My ex girlfriend studied in Madrid for awhile and we always found it funny to consider how the Spaniards have one of the highest life expectancies on Earth, but are always smoking, drinking, eating fried foods, and staying out late at night. At least compared to anywhere else I've been. We figured they must not be very stressed out.
