Here on holiday - wonderful country, wonderful food - but it seems that half the women I see in Spain are smokers. It's like the reverse of China - where most of the men smoke. Anyone have an insight as to why this might be?

I would say the rate of smokers fell steadily from 2005 onwards because of we have one of the strongest indoor tobacco ban in Europe, then that's why you would see so many people smoking outside near entrances everywhere.
However, I agree with you that most Spaniards young women smoke too much, even so they often like to get either drunk or high so many times by xtc pills, spliff, cocaine or whatever else.

Because they choose to smoke just like all of the other men and women on the planet who smoke.

Smoke is not a social thing, but a crime against those smokers and those who suffer second-hand smoke for years.
