My experiences have shown me Europeans and Americans get along fine as long as politics are left out.

It can be hard because I really heard more about American Politics when I lived in Austria than in California... each hourly radio broadcast has a segment on USA... can never recall hearing hourly newscasts in the USA with topics from Europe.

Among the young ones raised during the 60's and 70's there were many ultra-ultra-ultra communists. They were called the "maoists" or "sandinistas" or some other strange name I don't recall. They were rabidly antiamerican but their antiamericanism rarely went beyond not drinking coca cola (true) and listening to Frank Zappa.

Now I'm seeing how many of those coca cola haters are enthralled by New York, which indicates that they were plain ignorants.
In Italy, we just call them radical chic. They are sons of bourgeoise families who all of a sudden turn far-left wing in high school and university despite not really holding such beliefs deep down within themselves. They act in a way but think quite differently from how they act

Personally I know nobody who hates the US.

But the reason why many Germans are anti-American might be:

Many Germans have a quite socialist mindset and equate the US with capitalism.

Many Germans are pacifists and/or hate firearms, the US allowing its citizens to wear firearms is a no-no for them and honestly the USA waged various wars for no appropriate reason which hasn't increased its popularity.

I think anti-Americanism is prominent especially among leftists and we have a lot of them.

This is no excuse, there are various really good French (action) movies, I know only one good German action movie on the other hand.

I'm a AfD voter myself, I don't think that anti-Americanism is promiment among conservatives, it's rather found among die-hard neonazis and antisemites but they are some sort of socialists too as in national-socialism.

Most Germans have positive opinions of Americans (and vice-versa). This whole thread has a weird premise.

Obviously the average German isn't some left-wing former Baader-Meinhof or right wing Neo-Nazi. The average German likes and respects the U.S., and the average American likes and respects Germany. Of course there are some cultural difference and political disagreements.

I agree that most have positive opinions regarding Americans as persons, however I would disagree regarding how the nation of America and primarily it's foreign politics are seen.

Ok I am mainly going on the stuff I see posted on FB by my more right wing friends. My friends and acquaintances run the full gamut from hardcore lefties, greens, to borderline Neo-Nazis and all points in between.

Yeah, I think most Germans disagree with some of the politics in the U.S., but I think that's true for most countries. Germans and Americans are different, have different histories, and look at the world differently.

I think that's fine; friends can agree to disagree. I've lived in both countries, so can relate to the differences.

Ehhh... Yeah. The National Socialists were about as socialist as the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea is democratic and a republic of the people.

Ever heard about the Nacht der langen Messer and the Strasser brothers?
