Eight days in/around Munich (best, cost, train, German)

Hey all. I am going to have eight free days to spend in/around Munich in late February. I have seen all of Germany accept the SE region. I have also not been to Switzerland, Austria, and Czech Republic. I will have a car. I enjoy everything from museums, hiking, to theater. I fly in/our of Munich, so my only constraint is I have to start and end at Munich. Help me make my itinerary!!!

Dachau is a sobering day trip not far from Munich (I think about 20km or so). It's worth the visit.

Salzburg is 145km or so away and is well worth the trip. Check out the salt mines between Berchtesgaden and Salzburg - TOTALLY COOL TOUR.

Hitler's Eagles Nest is near Berchtesgaden but the roads may not be open in February up to the Eagles Nest. If they are, you really should go -the views are amazing and so much history happened there.

Berchtesgaden is a beautiful mountain town and was the wartime retreat of Hitler's elite so there is a lot of history there as well, if you are into WW2 history.

Passau is a beautiful city with great museums.

Three hours away or so is Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic. It is a beautifully intact medieval city. The 13th century castle is amazing.

Car ... You could use train but than no transportation to wherever else ...

Just make sure you have a small car with good gas mileage.

Hard to make an itinerary for you since we have lived there for many years but as a try:

Read the descriptions and determine if worthwhile.
Put the names in Google earth.
See where they are and then create a trip around or make day trips from Munich ...

Use your GPS to get there !

To save money. (Maybe you already know this !)
Stay at B&B if you can. Look for signs *Zimmer Frei* Does not mean free of cost !!
Breakfast, maybe included in your accommodations, but otherwise buy some rolls (Semmeln) and get some coldcuts or a small bottle of jam ?
For lunch, go to a grocery store, buy some good bread and cold cuts, a drink and visit some green pasture anywhere !
Dinner, take your pick from many *Gasthauses*. Many of them also are very good with fish dishes !

I just came back from a work related trip to Nuremberg. I didn't have a lot of time to sightsee, but I did get out and about for a couple days.

I definitely recommend going to Salzburg. The castle is a must-see, as well as a bunch of fantastic churches and cathedrals. And also just simply walking around the old town with its narrow streets.

You could visit Alte Pinakothek, Neue Pinakothek, Pinakothek der Moderne, Nymphenburg Palace, Schleissheim Palace, Marienplatz, the Olympia Park, Englischer Garten, Hofgarten, Deutsches Museum, Schwabing...

I would definitely choose a car (and have done so many times in the past). It's super easy to drive around in Germany.
