Interesting stuff here about France...Now I have a question...Would like to visit Alsace where my grand
father was born...the town is Guebwiller....would it be better for us to stay in Strasbourg or colmar?
we would probably be taking the train from Paris....Maybe rent a car, just not sure....I was in Paris,
many years ago...had a wonderful time and the people were very nice to us...I am not an American who
Expects people to speak English when I am in Europe....and what would be the best time of year to go
to Alsace...Thanks

Default France

I have not lived in France but have spent some time there. I found some Parisians to be quite difficult but people in the South to be much kinder. I speak some French and am older but some people in Paris were pretty darn mean.

Yet, there is no other city quite like Paris. I think everyone needs to spend some time there. You feel the spirit of all those who walked before you. That is helped by the preservation of architecture, the wonderful museums and cafes.

The French generally are very private. You are not likely to be invited to someone's home. There are some expat groups that can ease your entry into life there. And, if you are going to work there, possibly your cohorts will befriend you. I almost think it's easier if you're younger, but I have no firm info about that.

Best of luck. It is a lovely country where the quality of little things in life add up to the good life indeed.
