jejejeje Paris has no more validations than a host of other European cities...some Americans are starting to understand that Europe doesn't begin and ends with that city!
For me Paris , Edinburgh, Tallinn and Rome ( though Rome is absolutely exhausting). I am a big fan of great Architecture, Museums, and Art /Cultural pursuits so these cities fit me like a glove, ensuring I can never be bored.
In Spain Madrid does not really do it for me, just too daunting and I prefer smaller Spanish cities like Grenada, Salamanca or Barcelona. In Germany Berlin ( Bonn previously was quite dull anyway) really is not my cup of tea, too modern for my tastes though the Pergamon Museum is stunning ( Munich is lovely but not the Capital). In Austria Vienna is a beautiful city but having lived there I was left finding it the most bourgeois obsessed place in the world .
Prague is a stunning city of Glorious Architecture and fantastic history but the rapid change in the last twenty years of independence has meant it has lost a certain "je ne sais quoi" in terms of charm and individuality.
I adore Budapest though.
I loathe London with a passion, going there for me is like putting on tight uncomfortable shoes. I try to only go there is there is a great exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts or the V&A and most recent shows in the West End have been huge disappointment too. London to me has no heart, no character, it is just a collection of some lovely Architecture interspersed with hideous 60/70/80/90 s etc... monstrosities. There is no Architectural cohesion and it is just too big and too disjointed as a city.
I do like Dublin though the city has also changed beyond recognition and its beautiful Georgian Heart does not seem to beat at the same pace as it used too.
I'm voting for Berlin even though I love almost all the other capital cities. I would have voted Paris, but I think Berlin has the best connection between the Western culture and the newly emerging Eastern culture (formerly Soviet union).
Lisbon. The last truly Old World Western European capital, which also has the best weather in the world along with San Francisco. The closest that one can get to Paris or Rome in the 1920s/30s, fortunately minus the political aspects.
Where is Edinburgh??? Its the capital of Scotland and one of the prettiest cities in Europe.
