I have been working out regularly with three pound weights and I just moved up to five pound weights. I notice a difference in those weights, but, will that help me define my muscles a little more? I have totally noticed muscles in the last six months, but, I figure it is really time to bump it up.

I believe the number of reps is a lot more important than the amount of weight.

Are you doing reps or lifting while doing aerobic activity? If you're doing reps, then definitely increase the weight in safe increments.
I personally don't think it's safe to lift small weights over and over while doing aerobics/step classes, etc. as I think it can cause a repetitive injury but I see people do it every day at the gym on the treadmill, etc. or while jogging.
As your strength increases and you find you need heavier weights, yes you may begin to see muscle definition. However, depending on what you're doing with them, 3-5 lbs seems a bit light. But if YOU see and feel a difference, then congrads!

Though I loathe those classes and will never do it again, I can see where light weights and step aerobics can be useful, especially from a cardiovascular standpoint. With jogging, I can see light ankle and wrist weights, but on the treadmill, I just don't get it.

It's actually good to do repetative weight lifting while working other muscles, it helps to maximize your workout. Working the smaller muscles in with the larger muscles helps you maintain heart rate levels while continuing to add resistance with weight training.

In short, yes. Muscles adapt to the workouts you subject them to and can easily plateau. Moving up in weights or reps will "trick" your muscles into continuing to grow and muscle burns fat so.....i'd say if you feel you are ready to move up then that's awesome! That's the goal!

I notice a difference with my five pound weights and I swear my stomach feels leaner I figure I will give myself a week or two with the five pound weights and then move up to ten pound weights. I like it a lot
