I have found that I see the best gains in muscle mass and or strength gains and even fat-burning when I do intense workouts of particular muscle groups and then feel sore the next day. I like to feel that soreness because I know I did something right, but on the other hand the soreness is darned annoying when it goes on for more than a day.
What are everyone's thoughts on muscle soreness and mass and/or strength gains? Or even things people take/do to alleviate or prevent it?

soreness is generally related to people who havent lifted weights in a long time or people trying different exercises that they usually dont do. i find people in the first group sound silly when they talk about soreness. its good to be in the second group but i dont really change things up too much so i rarely feel any kind of soreness. also, drinking plenty of water and a pwo meal should help.
The day after lifting, I think I *should* be feeling it or else my weights were not challenging enough. A good workout produces a "good sore" feeling.
On the other hand, if I am not starting to recover by the second or third day, maybe I did too much or injured myself. That isn't a good feeling because it means that I have to back off.
I don't use pain relievers, though I sometimes use rest and an ice pack or heating pad on an overly sore muscle.
I agree with you Noa2sgf - same opinions on everything stated.
I stay away from pain relievers because I don't want to screw up my liver for something that I generally like the feel of/know it's a good sign. The other day I did some squats and deadlifts for the first time in ages and indeed I am sore 3 days later and I am thinking I might have pushed myself a bit too hard and being in my mid-thirties now perhaps I am a little slower to heal than I was in my younger years.
I rarely got DOMS now. Just because your not feeling it the next doesn't mean it wasn't a good workout. It could mean something more sinister if you are getting sore all the time.
Stretching before (gently) and after eliminates soreness also.
