Agreed! That is ridiculous. Check out a guy from Western Pennsylvania by the name of Lou Lodovico. This website has some of his race results from last year. He is now 88. Member News - Big Beaver Big Dawgs
27 minutes in the 5K at age 86? I know of 30-somethings who wish they could run that time.
Here in the PNW we have a guy named Bill Iffrig who is 77 and putting up impressive times. He ran a recent 5K in 22:27, and a sub 1 hour 12K in December 2011 (57:47). bill iffrig's Race Results at Athlinks.com

Did you notice that Lou ran 25 races last year and already has one in this year.
No, the link did not work for me, but 25 races is a lot of racing. He's got me beat, that's for sure.
I think it is a phenomenon that has not really gotten the attention that it deserves--we now have a fair number of people in their 70's and 80's who can outrun much younger people. I know guys in their 20's & 30's who are relatively fitness-concious, and yet if they run 3 miles in 30 minutes they consider it a monumental acheivement.
There are several retirement condos in my neighborhood, and I see so many people who can barely walk at that that age. I suspect these are people who spent their whole lives sitting at a desk, driving, taking the elevator etc. And yet doc says no running over 40! Go figure.
Here is another good link on Lou Lodovico showing his American Masters 85-89 Road Records. USATF - Statistics - Records
