So why do I feel fitter and stronger when I resume exercising after a couple days of rest than I do if I exercise several days in a row? Hmmm.

You need rest. To recover. Your muscles grow when you rest. But you can still work other muscles on other days.

Periodic 1 week breaks have worked for me. This week I have taken the whole week off from working out except for some light stretching. Last time I took a week off was the last week of December. It has worked for me. Sometimes one needs to back off a little to see progress or just to heal and return fresh to workouts. Everyone is different and their bodies react and recover different. Also, sometimes I plan more intensive weeks And follow it by a week of moderate workouts.

I rarely take more than one day off at a time. However my all time best workouts happen after a 2 day rest.

Too much of a good thing can be bad...it's not as enjoyable in many aspect IMO. I lift four times a week, ride my bike once a week and have two days off in general. Still keep my life as active as possible but stimulating the body while getting enough rest is really important IMO.

At the same time if I was say 20 again, sure. I'll probably be able to abuse my body even more.

THANK YOU! Exactly. I've seen these guys, the denial is mind boggling. And they are very scornful of people who DO work out.
