I am having a total block on how to figure this out, and while math is not my strong suit, this is stupid even for me.
I want to figure out my speed of walking, and it's between 4 mph and 3 mph. I walked 5 miles in 86 minutes. I need that the figure so i can figure out how many cals were burned.

That's a respectable pace over 5 mi. The way I usually figure it is 3 mph is a 20 min mile, 4 mph is a 15 min mile, 3.5 mph comes to 17.14 min per mile. So then I add up my miles for a target time. I'm usually aiming at 3.5 myself, but it's so easy to get distracted when going for a walk.
I have to do this kind of calculation all the time because the treadmill only gives MPH, while runners tend to think in minutes per mile.
Rule of them is to divde 60 by whatever number you wish to convert.
60 ÷ MPH=minutes per mile
60÷ (minutes per mile)=MPH
You must convert seconds to fractions of a minute before doing calculations, convert back to seconds after doing them. To do this, divide by or multiply by 60 respectively. For example .5 minutes=60 secs X .5=30 seconds.
Say you ran your local 10K (6.2 miles) in 40 min 30 secs, and want to know what treadmill speed that translates to.
40.5÷6.2=6.53 minute per mile pace, or 6 min 31.9 sec per mile pace
First you calculate minutes per mile by dividing # mins total by total miles run:
86/5 = 17.2 min per mile
To get mph, you would take minutes in an hour/minutes per mile. So,
60/17.2 = 3.48
