My sister volunteers as a swim instructor and she told me, lately, she's been having a lot of students age 40 and over. She told me close to half of the U.S. population can't swim.

Can you swim?

List your AGE and YES or NO.

Tell us why you can't swim.

Me: 38/Yes

I began swimming as a child. My parents got me swim lessons at an early age. I am middle aged now and I still swim taking an occasional masters swim class to improve my techniques.

I can swim, but not for long distances (ie: I can't make it from one length of a public pool to the opposite end without pausing for a moment in the middle to catch my breath and give my muscles a break). I've been athletic for my entire life, but it seems to me that I can't swim for long distances because my small body can't handle the physical work that that requires.

So, I imagine that if I were in the ocean, a mile away from shore, I wouldn't be able to swim all the way to save myself.

My family moved a lot; I've only had a few lessons with my father, who took swimming lessons in his youth.

Age: No. I'll just say I'm not middle-aged.

I still swim 2-3 times a week at the gym. Learned from my friends at high school.

Age: Why do you need to know?

Yep. I was brought up sailing. We lived on the Lake Michigan shore. I was in on or around water for my entire life. I couldn't get enough of it. I was a competitive swimmer, sailor, and rower, former lifeguard, former sailing instructor... I think I got them all. You pretty much need to be a strong swimmer for most of those things.

I am really surprised when I meet adults who can't swim, but I guess people don't ever have a need or an opportunity.

Edit... in my 30s for a little while longer

Yes - was on the YMCA swim team in my younger days and just moved from a house with a pool.

I love the water.

> 50 and swim well. Competitive swimmer through high school.

An adult that can't swim is sad, and dangerous.

Moderator cut: Please, stay on topic.

I think the triathlon explosion nationally has caused a lot of adults to take up swimming so they can even participate in the sport. It's a good thing.
