I usually exhaust myself doing 300 crunches and it's been working well, but I am usually exhausted after doing other workouts that I dread doing crunches at the end.
Is it ok to spread it out daily? Like doing 200 a day? Or are abs a muscle group that need the daily rest?
You're probably overtraining. Adaptation does not take place during workouts, it takes place in recovery. Throw in some easy days so that the quality of your intense days is not compromised.
I do ab workouts every other day, M W F and do about 340 reps per workout. I would imagine that doing crunches every day would not be the most effective way to get your ab workout in.
Side question on Abs -- Usually when I do crunches my back starts to ache preventing me from continuing. Anyone have thoughts on this?
Stop doing crunches and find some other core work exercises you can do. The most effective crunches are when you are in the up position you hold it for 10 seconds or more. You do not need to do a boatload of crunches, you just need to hold them longer.
You can also sit on a stability ball and do them that way if you must. Research core exercises and you will come up with a plethora of moves much more effective than crunches.
