Well, I turned 50 today and definitely do not feel what I imagined it would feel like in terms of health metrics- speed, stamina, flexibility, reflexes, strength. Surprised at the loss of flexibility but I never used that aspect much and do miss the loss of acceleration(I was proud of my sprinting ability) but that is balanced by the new found strength and continued excellent stamina.(Thank goodness for the non-sedentary lifestyle of an earlier generation) Reflexes are still taut. Overall quite happy.
I'm 47 and still very flexible, but I stretch daily and have been working out for over 25 years. I refuse to stop now... afraid I'll start feeling old lol! I talk to a couple guys at the gym who are lover 50s and in great shape, and both of them have worked out since their 20s. I think the key may be decades of working out/cardio and relatively healthy eating. One thing I have on my side is that I'm just not a "sit around" kind of person. I've always liked moving around and keeping physically busy.

I am planning for about 2years self-improvement efforts to completely transform myself physically so that when I'm 50, I'm in the best shape possible. Are there any guys out there who have done the same?

Also, looking for ideas for changing my eating and drinking habits. Due to my diabetes, I've doing pretty good at curbing my sugars and carbs. But I know I have eating habits that hit the 3000 daily calorie intake, especially with the happy hour brews. Yeah, I know I gotta stop, it's a problem but a form of stress release.

Anyway, any words of encouragement and links to resources, etc. to get me going would be appreciated. Many thanks in advance!
This is alarming to hear from a diabetic. Have you discussed this with your doctor? Some alcohol beverages contain sugar. Most cause blood sugar to fluctuate erratically. Go to the gym as a substitute for happy hour, get your stress release there. Losing weight is as much about changing habits as it is about counting carbs or calories. Kick up your protein intake, so you can build lean muscle mass (it speeds weight loss), and eliminate those alcohol carbs.

I'm a 53 y/o female and I just pushed a 500 lb prowler sled last night.

Started with my current gym 2.5 years ago.
I've written about my medical history & recovery in the fitness forum...somewhere...here >> //www.city-data.com/forum/exerc...ng-injury.html

So, yes, it can be done.

Find a form of exercise/programming you like & have fun. The gains will come.

A 2 year 3 month lapse in the thread? Is the OP still around? If so...............

Lots of good advice.....back in 2012 and just in recent days.

I recommend---geez I don't want to get smacked by a moderator so I'll be stealth---"BFFM" by T. V. (do an online search). Great publication (and it can be a "lifestyle", blah, blah, blah). It helped me drop my body fat % and increase my LBM (lean body mass). Lots of background educational info and recommendations on how to set and achieve your fitness goals and a whole lot more.

I'd post more but the OP's probably out and about, livin' life and livin' large. Good on ya, Newme50!
