The article isn't saying that obesity is healthy, per se, it says that an obese person with no markers for high blood pressure, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol isn't at any greater risk for heart disease or cancer than an normal weight person.
From the article:
Quote:
People can be obese yet physically healthy and fit and at no greater risk of heart disease or cancer than normal weight people, say researchers.
The key is being "metabolically fit", meaning no high blood pressure, cholesterol or raised blood sugar, and exercising, according to experts.
Why is the article so hard for some of you to believe?
For starters,the article does say"exercise".
So these obese people still exercise, which has some benefit.
It isn't telling obese people to not exercise. Its actually telling them to exercise.
Simple: Fat people are the last "class" of people, others can pick on, openly, and there not be a problem.
If this article were about blacks, jews, or anything else, these same people would not be commenting. However, make it a fat person, and the flood gates open up. Its just one more case of: They are superior to someone else.
And no, I'm not fat either. It just sickens me how some persons have a "holier then though" attitude, because they believe they are some super genetic freak.

There are many people who are bigger due to genetics, they eat right, stay active, but have trouble keeping weight off. I see them working out and my attitude is "this person is doing something right" unlike the people who are large and at the buffet line everyday, and then say "woe is me, I cant do anything, have 10 ailments..please pay for my healthcare"..those people **** me off.

Exactly my point. People equate what they SEE to "fitness." I can take you to many of my friends whom the vast majority of people would consider overweight. Yet, they all walk, workout in a gym 4-6 times a week, play softball, basketball, etc. However, these same "holier then though" persons would say they are unfit.
I can also take you to another group of friends, whose body weight is normal. They don't walk, don't workout, and get winded walking up a flight of stairs. Again, these "holier then though" persons would say they are in shape.
While their argument has merit; no one is denying, in general, being obese/overweight is not good for you, it is not the "death touch" these people are whining about. There are exceptions to every rule. The simple fact is: These people just don't like the fact someone is fat. They think its disgusting and, because its politically correct still to put a fat person down, they continue to do it.
As I said, if the article said being jewish or being black or being Irish, etc this thread would have died along time ago. There pure hatred toward others "not like them" is coming out; same as I bet many are closet racists.
Someone might be genetically predisposed to having high blood pressure. That does not make high blood pressure healthy.
Well, I didn't quite say that. What I said was:
Some people are genetically predisposed to being overweight. Same thing with being near-sighted or having ears that stick out, or having red hair. Or as far as that goes, people who lose their hair at the age of 18 or going grey or white at an early age.
I do believe blood pressure could be contained via healthy foods, supplements, or drugs.
So in less than one generation, a large amount of Americans all of a sudden devleoped a predisposition to being fat? That is one heck of an evolutionary cycle, evolution on steriods.
I think people are just predisposed to being lazy. I can understand somebody saying that they would be easier for them to get fatter if they don't workout, but I don't believe you can just be overweight no matter how healthy you eat, and exercise constantly.
What you don't understand is that a woman who is 5ft 4in and 190 lbs isn't enough info.
According to the Bmi chart, yes she is obese.
But let me ask you this: What if she has a body fat level of 19%?
That's within the healthy range of BF for women according the WHO.
That would mean this woman has only 36 pounds of fat and 154 pounds of muscle!!!
Contrast this with a 5ft 4in 105 pound woman who is healthy and thin according to Bmi charts, but has a BF level of 32%.
That would mean this woman has 75 pounds of muscle and a whopping 35 pounds of fat!!
So,guess who is obese according to WHO? She is,because her BF level puts her in the obese category.
Hello, did anyone reas what I wrote?
Bmi and linking great health to normal weight is so yesterday.
Bf percentage is more accurate predictor of potential health problems than anything.
This is why you can have overweight people who run marathons and skinny people who drop dead of heart attacks.

No kidding. The US obesity rate was 9% in the 50s; today it's 34%. And I've witnessed immigrants who came here thin suddenly gain 10 lbs the first year they lived in the US. Geeee I guess they became predisposed to gaining weight once they stepped on American soil? I've also noticed Italian Americans are fat, but the obesity rate in Italy is only 8%. Hmm I wonder why????? (sarcasm )
Take every obese person in the US and send them to a poor country where people eat grains instead of cheeseburgers and potato chips, and I guarantee 99% of them would turn thin.
People need to quit making excuses for fat people. The genetic excuse is the worst.
I, for one, no longer eat hamburgers, hotdogs, french fries, ice cream (not counting non-cream iced cream), and so forth. And I was already a "Slim Jim". I just saw a light come on and started eating healthy stuff.
As a matter of fact, lots of "apparently healthy" people can also die prematurely. Being skinny doesn't mean squat.
